RED DEER- The Red Deer area unemployment rate for February remained unchanged from January at 5.5%.

The unemployment rate for our area in February 2017 was 9%.

The Alberta rate dropped from 7.0 % to 6.7%.

The national unemployment rate edged down to 5.8% last month from 5.9 % in January as the country added 15,400 net new jobs.

But the gains were due to a surge in part-time work that offset a heavy decline in full-time positions.

Stats Canada says the country lost 39,300 full-time jobs while creating 54,700 part-time positions.

Last month's overall job growth represents an improvement over January's loss of 88,000 positions -- the labour force's steepest one-month drop in nine years.
