Brazeau County mulling over idea of garbage collection for densely populated areas

Mar 9, 2018 | 6:23 AM

Brazeau County is looking at launching a questionnaire for residents to give feedback on garbage collection to see if there is any interest in fee for service garbage collection in densely populated areas of the County.

There are currently eight transfer stations scattered throughout the county that provide residents with a place to dispose of household solid waste.

The idea is to have bins at individual subdivisions, farms and acreages for pickup however it is acknowledged that it could be challenging to manage without supervision of what is being tossed away.

Additional county resources may be need to be deployed to check and sanitize such bins regularly in that case as well.

The service is being looked at for multiple areas in the county, including Buck Creek, Cynthia, Lodgepole, Rocky Rapids and Violet Grove.

When considering curb side pickup for hamlets the Ring Road and Lindale were included although not hamlets.  The estimated cost for garbage collection amounts to approximately $35 a month per resident.

The questionnaire will first have to be approved by council and is planned to go out with taxes in the areas where the services may be offered.

Council also said on Tuesday that since Birchwood Village Greens does have a bin which is exclusively for the community and both Poplar Ridge and Country Style Mobile Home Parks have bins exclusively used for their residents, they won’t be included in the mail out.
