Thunder head coach resigns after troublesome season

The Drayton Valley Thunder are once again without a head coach, as the team struggles to regroup after a dreadful 20th season. 

Ryan Rechner is out as head coach of the team, the second departure of that nature this season. There have been five Thunder coaches to leave the team since the 2015-2016 season. 

In a post to his Twitter account Monday night Rechner said, “Thank you everyone for supporting me on my journey this year. I regret to inform you I’ve resigned effective immediately as Head Coach.”

Thunder President and Governor Monte Waronek says they hope to be a contender come next year, adding that this past season has been difficult. 

Amid talk of General Manager Joey Bouchard leaving the team, Waronek was unable to confirm if he was or not.

Thunder’s Director of Player Development Jason Nicholetts also seems to be leaving the team after sending out a tweet Monday night as well saying, “Thank you to all the staff and players of the DV Thunder. I have chose to resign my position with the organization effective immediately.“

Coach Rechner was added to the team at the beginning of November 2017 after coach Kyle Adams was let go after the season started with three wins against 18 losses.

Over the weekend the team finished the year at 17-40-3 overall. It’s the worst showing since the 2009-2010 season for the group.
