The outdoors has come indoors at Red Deer’s Westerner Park this weekend with the arrival of the 52ND Annual Red Deer Sportsman and Outdoor Adventure Show.
The show began Friday March 2 and continues through Sunday, March 4 inside the Parkland, Prairie and Stockman’s Pavilions.
Event spokesperson Jeff Chocholacek says there are just-under 150 exhibitors at this year’s show.
“We’ve got fishing charters, we’ve got camping, we’ve got hunting,” says Chocholacek. “We have accessories for hunting and camping, accessories for your trailers, boats, quads, all sorts of stuff. Anything to do with the outdoors.”
Chocholacek says the nice thing about doing an event like this in Red Deer is all the rural communities around it.
“All the farmers come in because you’re not doing much farm-wise,” says Chocholacek. “There’s no harvesting going on. Yeah, you have to worry about your livestock but now is a good time for everybody to come into town and check this stuff out.”
He goes on to say, “Whether you want to be fishing or hunting or camping or trail rides or golfing or just outdoor oriented is the big thing.”
Over the last three or four years, Chocholacek estimates between 10-12 thousand people that come through the doors to see the show.
“We do have new exhibitors every year,” states Chocholacek. “We’re always trying to push the show different ways just to make it interesting for the general public.”
Chocholacek says there are a number of door prizes that take place throughout the weekend, including a Salmon Fishing Trip for Two, courtesy of Silver King Lodge, a Weekend Getaway for Two from Ram River Horseback Tours, a Spotting Scope and Tripod from Alberta Hunter Education Instructor’s Association and Trail Camera, courtesy of New World Outfitters among others.
The Red Deer Sportsman and Outdoor Adventure Show runs until 7:00 p.m. March 3 and from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4.
