Feb 13, 2018 | 9:06 AM

More than 1,000 athletes will travel to Wood Buffalo later this week for the Alberta Winter Games, including many from the central Alberta area.

The Games run February 16 to 19 and feature a number of typical winter sports as well as some normally summertime competitions like badminton, wrestling and volleyball.

“Alberta Sport Connection and the provincial sport organizing bodies all consider the Alberta Winter Games the first step of an athlete’s development model,” says Myles Kidd, Chef de Mission for Zones 3 and 4 (Central Alberta). “They hope a core group of these athletes go on to represent Alberta at other multi-sport games, so western Canada Games, Canada Games —  you won’t see any of these athletes at the 2019 Canada Games probably, but beyond those, theyre looking for post secondary athletes and future Olympians.”

Approximately 170 athletes will be attending the games from the communities of Red Deer, Innisfail, Rocky Mountain House, Leslieville, Lacombe, Blackfalds, Olds, Bentley, Wetaskiwin, Millet, Penhold, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer County, Ponoka, Eckville, Rimbey, Drayton Valley, Stettler and Castor.
