Experience Discovery School taking youngsters outdoors

Feb 7, 2018 | 1:33 PM

A pilot project by Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools is allowing Pre-K students to take in a little bit more of Mother Nature.

Experience Discovery School is an extension of Red Deer Catholic’s Pre-K program, with each class currently getting one week’s worth to spend at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area.

Coordinator of Early Learning Suzy Potts says this new programming empowers children to discover, play, engage and embrace their natural curiosities about the world around them.

“Through this holistic experience, children make meaningful connections about authentic learning which allows them to comprehend their world and apply their knowledge in bountiful ways,” she says.

Outdoor lessons may involve learning mathematics by finding berries, feeding the birds, or playing ‘I Spy.’

The pilot runs from January to April, but Potts notes the hope is it will go year-round beginning this September.
