100+ Women gives to Habitat for Humanity for new build project

Feb 7, 2018 | 8:29 AM

100+ Women Who Care Red Deer has chosen its first recipient of 2018.

The several thousand dollars members will contribute will go to Habitat for Humanity Red Deer.

Habitat CEO Karen Vavrek says her organization is extremely grateful.

“We are thrilled to have been chosen by 100 Women Who Care,” she says. “The proceeds from all of the contributions will be going to support our newest build project in southeast Red Deer, and it’s very timely because we’re having our ground-breaking ceremony at the build site on February 15.”

The ground-breaking for the new two-unit home is happening from 12-1 p.m. and is open to the public.

Susan Knopp with 100+ Women touched on why the group went with Habitat.

“While I can’t speak for everyone, our members understand the importance of having a home, how much need there is in our community, and the participation/volunteer component that homeowners must complete in order to be eligible,” she says. “At this bitterly cold time of year, it’s not hard to understand why everyone should be entitled to a warm home to call their own.”

As well, 100+ Women celebrated its three-year anniversary at their first quarterly meeting of the year. In three years, the group has raised more than $218,000 for 12 charities, and that’s not counting the estimated $17,000 that will come in for Habitat.
