WATCHDOG ALLEGES 16-YEAR BREAD SCAM: The federal Competition Bureau alleges that at least $1.50 has been artificially baked into the price of a loaf of bread during a 16-year conspiracy involving the country’s largest bakery wholesalers and grocery retailers. Court documents released Wednesday allege that senior officers from Canada Bread Company Ltd. and George Weston Ltd. communicated directly to raise prices at least 15 times between about 2001 and 2016. After agreeing on an increase, the suppliers allegedly met individually with retail clients including Loblaw, Walmart, Sobeys, Metro and Giant Tiger to get their approval.
