Nominations are now being accepted for the 11th annual Women of Excellence Awards in Red Deer.
Officials say nominations are being accepted until January 31 at 4:30 p.m. for the event which recognizes and pays tribute to women who make outstanding contributions to our community.
Carina Moran is a 2017 Nominee in the Entrepreneurship category and Co-Owner of Sweet Capones Italian Bakery in Lacombe. She says the Red Deer and District Community Foundation has updated the nomination process this year.
“It’s been split into two sections, so the deadline just to simply nominate someone is January 31,” explains Moran. “All the rest of the supporting documents and details, they just need to be in by the end of February, so February 2018.”
Moran says women are inherently nurturing, caring, loving and passionate people and when a woman seizes the opportunity to reverberate those qualities into the world around her, monumental changes can be made.
“Those women, the ones that are doing just that, I feel deserve to be celebrated,” says Moran. “In recognizing them, we provide tangible examples to our society of what a woman can really accomplish. It’s my hope that through recognizing this, we will see a more nurturing, compassionate and loving society,” continues Moran. “It takes honestly, a really brave woman to lead but I do believe that we have that capability in each of us, so the ones that inspire you, please nominate them.”
Kelly Tibbetts is a past winner of the award, winning in the Community Building category in 2016. She says it’s an honour to be nominated but was recognized for the work she does with the Princess Ball.
“My daughter Rowan has Cystic Fibrosis, so it’s my heart,” explains Tibbetts. “So it was sort of like getting my heart and my passion and my work validated. It really means everything and it really means all the hard work that you’ve put in, people have noticed and want to celebrate you and the work you do and the cause that you represent.”
For the past 11 years, central Albertans have celebrated over 230 Women of Excellence who use their skills, talents, time and drive to make our community a better place to live, work and play. Officials say past nominees can still be nominated but previous winners cannot win twice.
Women of Excellence can be nominated in 11 different categories of distinction. They include Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Athletics, Recreation and Fitness, Business and the Professions, Community Building, Education and Training, Entrepreneurship, Environment, Health and Wellness, Human Services and the Young Woman of Excellence.
The Awards Gala takes place June 6, 2018 at the Sheraton Red Deer.
