A feisty affair served as the first half of a home and home series between the Red Deer Rebels and Edmonton Oil Kings Wednesday night at the Enmax Centrium.
Winners of just seven games so far this season, the Oil Kings were able to skate away with a 3-1 win.
The action got going early, Red Deer's Alexander Alexeyev capitalizing on an early penalty against Edmonton to make it 1-0 just 1:25 in.
Alexeyev cut to the inside and fired it over Josh Dechaine's shoulder to give the home team the quick lead.
Following a fight between Colton Kehler and Brandon Cutler which saw them both ejected for staged fighting, a short brawl occurred in front of the team benches. A number of misconducts were doled out resulting in Red Deer racking up 36 penalty minutes in the period, and Edmonton 38.
Shortly after the dust-up, Red Deer was assessed a bench unsportsmanlike conduct. Six seconds later, the game was tied 1-1 on Davis Koch's 15th.
Three minutes later, the Oil Kings leading scorer Trey Fix-Wolansky put Edmonton ahead with his 13th of the year.
In the second period, Edmonton didn't let up, killing off a penalty which carried over from the first, then scoring 2:00 in -- David Kope notched his 3rd of the season.
The third period was fairly uneventful, featuring two Red Deer minors early on which Edmonton couldn't take advantage of, and then coincidental and incidental minors late in the frame.
Following the game, Head Coach Brent Sutter said his team's performance was unacceptable.
“Our first period was terrible. We were obviously not ready to play. We had too many shifts where we didn’t get engaged and finish checks," he said. "We chased a lot and we took some penalties tonight you can’t take. So that part of it is disappointing. You finish the break off the right way and tonight we weren’t the same team. If we want to catch these teams in front us, we have to do our part. We had some chances though. We created some things, some odd man rushes, but you’ve got to capitalize or at least get scoring chances off them."
Both teams went 1/4 on the powerplay. Edmonton led in the shot department 33-28. Red Deer is now 2-1 in the season series vs. Edmonton having earned two victories at the start of the season, also during a home and home.
Tonight's Booster Juice three stars were Trey Fix-Wolansky (3rd), Alexander Alexeyev (2nd), and Conner McDonald (1st).
The next Rebels broadcast is Thursday when Red Deer visits Edmonton for a rematch with the Oil Kings. The call begins at 6:50 p.m. with the puck drop at 7 LIVE on 106.7 The Drive.
