Losers of 10 straight games and 16 of their last 17, the Red Deer Rebels aren’t waiting for the WHL Trade Deadline to shake things up.
GM and Head Coach Brent Sutter pulled the trigger on a trade late Friday night to send 19-year old forward Lane Zablocki to the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
In return, the Rebels get 17-year-old forward and hometown Red Deer product Josh Tarzwell, a second round selection in the 2019 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, and a conditional third round pick in 2020.
Zablocki came to the Rebels as part of a Trade Deadline blockbuster deal last January with the Regina Pats. He thrived upon arriving in Red Deer, putting up 29 points in 31 games to finish the 2016-17 season. The Wetaskiwin native was then selected by Detroit in round three of the 2017 NHL Draft.
However, Zablocki struggled to find his stride with the Rebels this season, putting up 19 points in 30 games and a minus-seven rating while leading the team in penalty minutes with 47.
In Tarzwell, who is eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft, the Rebels acquire a player with plenty of upside. The youngster has 14 points in 27 games with Lethbridge this season. In his rookie campaign with the Hurricanes last year, Tarzwell netted 5 points in 36 regular season games and added three more points in 10 playoff contests. He also played at the 2016 World U-17 Hockey Challenge where he had one assist in five games.
Tarzwell came up through the ranks playing Bantam AAA, Minor Midget Elite and Midget AAA hockey in his hometown. As a 15-year-old, he racked up 18 points in 32 games with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs in 2015-16.
