Great news for Red Deerians looking to hit the outdoor rinks this weekend.

Starting Friday, December 1, city officials say all of Red Deer’s neighbourhood rinks and natural skating surfaces will be ready for use, as crews have now completed installing rink boards and preparing the ice surfaces for skating.

This means lights at outdoor rinks will stay on until 10:00 p.m. as per the Parks and Facilities Bylaw.

However, the public is reminded that helmets are recommended at all times and that hockey pucks and sticks are not permitted at Bower Ponds.

Also of note, the former outdoor speed skating oval near the Golden Circle is no longer in operation, as the new outdoor speed skating oval at Great Chief Park is in the final stages of construction. That’s due to open in January of 2018.
