UPDATE: RCMP make arrest in relation to incident north of Red Deer

Nov 8, 2017 | 10:41 AM

RCMP say as of 3:45 p.m. on Nov. 8, 38-year-old Michael Richter has been arrested in connection to an incident Monday afternoon north and east of Red Deer.

Mounties had put out a warrant for his arrest earlier on Wednesday. He was taken into custody without incident.

Blackfalds detachment originally responded around 4 p.m. on Monday to a two vehicle collision on Township Road 394 which resulted in the driver of an SUV taking the other driver’s pick-up truck and fleeing. The driver of the pick-up suffered some injuries as a reult of a struggle between himself and the suspect.

Mounties say the truck, with two flat tires, travelled northbound towards Bashaw before turning west towards Ponoka. It was last seen driving off a dead end road (RR 243 north of Highway 53) and onto an oilfield lease site.

At about 5:10, RCMP from Ponoka, Blackfalds, Maskwacis and Bashaw, as well as support units from Red Deer, Wetaskiwin and RCMP helicopter, created a containment around the site. It was soon determined the suspect had gotten away prior to the containment being set up by fleeing on a snowmobile.

Charges of robbery, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and disobeying a court order are now pending against Richter.

Richter was also wanted on prior warrants out of Ponoka and Red Deer.
