AHS releases first data report on 2017/18 flu season

Nov 3, 2017 | 7:32 AM

CALGARY – Alberta Health Services numbers show that 424,101 Albertans have had their flu shot this season.

The flu has already arrived in the province with 257 laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza A.

Thirty-two of those cases were in the Central Zone which includes the Red Deer area.

There have also been 31 laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza B, two of those were in the Central Zone.

So far, 90 Albertans have been admitted to hospital and three people have died, but no deaths have been reported in the Central Zone.

“It’s important to remember the influenza data we capture in our weekly updates is considered a mere fraction of the influenza activity that is actually impacting our friends, loved ones and neighbours,” says Dr. Gerry Predy, AHS’ Senior Medical Officer of Health.

Influenza immunization is available, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older.

For more information about influenza, the ongoing influenza immunization program (including clinic dates, times and locations), and to access the weekly data update, visit www.ahs.ca/influenza.
