In a departure for the Athlete of the Month award, ASDC-Central has chosen to honour the entire Red Deer Titans U18 team.
The squad captured Gold at the Alberta Rugby Union’s 2017 U18 Girls Provincial Championship with an utterly dominant 107 – 0 win over the Edmonton Nor’westers.
Both teams entered the championship game undefeated for the season but it was the Titans who proved their dominance. The Titans outscored their opponents 722 – 81 over the course of the season.
When discussing their performance it is important to remember that only a few short seasons ago the Titans were coming off a winless season.
The Titans are composed of 28 girls from five communities (Red Deer – 17; Rimbey – 4; Rocky Mountain House – 4; Lacombe – 2; and Byemoor – 1).
The Titans were led by Courtney Holtkamp, Lora Lee, Leah Brunner, and Gwen Fillinger to name a few. Courtney & Jada Holtkamp, Leah Brunner, Gwen Fillinger, Lora Lee and Rachel Sever all went on to play with Team Alberta U18 this summer, as did Camryn Holland with Team Alberta U16. Courtney Holtkamp led Team Alberta to a Gold Medal at Nationals as team captain and the tournament's leading scorer.
Courtney Holtkamp, ASDC-Central’s Athlete of the Month for April 2016, also competed for Team Canada U18’s in international play competing in Ottawa this summer vs USA U18’s in a 15’s competition. Courtney recently returned from France where she competed with Team Canada U18’s in a Rugby 7’s competition.
Two years ago, Titans Rugby through the initiative of Head Coach Kenton Poelzer created the School of Rugby initiative and partnered with ASDC-Central to provide strength and conditioning, mental skills and nutrition seminars to the areas rugby youth. It appears that that partnership is paying dividends.
ASDC-Central thanks Tom Bast Sports for celebrating the ASDC-Central Athlete of the Month recipients by the provision of commemorative apparel for each recipient.
