The Town of Blackfalds is moving ahead with a plan to add much-needed affordable housing for seniors.

A 0.91-acre parcel of land at Broadway and South Street was recently purchased by the Town for $260,000 and during the purchasing process, it was determined the land’s suitability for a future seniors’ housing development is high.

It’s believed the location is a prime one given its proximity to the downtown area, future commercial development to the south and the to-be-developed Tutty Pond Park.

The parcel is also adjacent to another recently purchased lot should there be a need for a larger land base.

A Social Needs Assessment and Master Plan done by FCSS in 2016 identified the lack of affordable housing in Blackfalds as a significant reason:

- For people working in Blackfalds and living elsewhere,
- By seniors who have to leave the community to find appropriate and affordable housing and,
- By young families living in or wanting to live in the community

The Province has announced there is funding for seniors’ housing and thus the Town believes that with the help of the Lacombe Foundation and the Bethany Group, funding could be pursued for an affordable seniors’ housing project.

More information is expected back on council’s desk by the end of the year.
