Chamber pushing petition for more consultation on taxing small business

Aug 29, 2017 | 10:39 AM

Canadians from all parts of the country are being urged to act now in pushing the federal government for extended consultations on proposed changes to private corporation taxation.

Locally, the Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce is joining the call and asking members of the public to sign a petition imploring Finance Minister Bill Morneau to commit to a more complete review.

“We’re just really concerned about the impact the proposed changes will have,” says Reg Warkentin, Policy Manager. “From everything we’re seeing and reading, it’s going to have a devastating change, disproportionately affecting small business owners.”

Warkentin would also like those interested to read the Canadian Chamber’s ‘5 Minutes of Business’ to learn more.

Proposed changes focus on three areas: sprinkling income using private corporations, holding a passive investment portfolio inside a private corporation, and converting a private corporation’s regular income into capital gains.

The current deadline for written comments to be sent to the Department of Finance Canada is October 2.
