A Red Deerian is continuing her work to battle racism and discrimination, now on a federal level.

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO has appointed a City of Red Deer representative to the Advisory Committee of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD).

Tymmarah Sheculski, Human Resources Specialist – Diversity and Inclusion with the City has been given the honour.

Sheculski joins the committee tasked with reviewing and advising on the overall direction of CCMARD, a group of 72 Canadian municipalities committed to respecting and promoting human rights and diversity.

“Joining this group puts Red Deer in a position to not only learn best practices from other communities, but to lead the way in how best to combat racism and discrimination across Canada,” said Sheculski.

Since 2013, the City of Red Deer has been a signatory of CCMARD and has worked to promote diversity and inclusion through City initiatives while working towards a more welcoming community as a whole.

Some of the initiatives implemented include City staff diversity and inclusion training sessions. These have been adapted and will begin being offered to the community in the fall of 2017.

“Red Deer has made a lot of strides in the recent past towards a more welcoming community, but we still have a lot of work to do,” she said.

Sheculski added that opportunities like those with the CCMARD Advisory Committee help to support the efforts of many community members and will continue to place Red Deer at the forefront of diversity work within Canada.
