County signs off on Bowden annexation

Jul 4, 2017 | 12:10 PM

The Town of Bowden is annexing land from Red Deer County for the first time in about a decade .

County council put their stamp of approval on the request Tuesday morning, paving the way for final approval from the Municipal Government Board and provincial government.

The annex is about 200 acres and is located adjacent to the southwest corner of Bowden.

“It’s good, honestly. There is some good development that is happening there near Bowden — it will definitely help that,” says Jim Wood, Mayor of Red Deer County.

“We’re in very strong financial shape and I think it’s important that we work with the communities that are within our boundaries to see that we’re all successful. It’ll be beneficial to us all and it’s going to create a lot of jobs.”

Wood adds the annexation will particularly benefit the farming community.

Each of the subject properties on the land being annexed are already owned by the Town of Bowden. In a report submitted to the County, the Town also notes that the main access to the properties is from the town. As well, a sewage lift station and sewage lagoon on the properties are part of the Town’s infrastructure.

The lands also include that which the W.A. Grain facility sits on.

The South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission has also given its approval of the annexation.
