Pop-up percussion performance today at G.H. Dawe School
The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra (RDSO) is preparing for the conclusion of the pilot phase of their Education and Outreach program, Music + Explorers at G.H. Dawe School.
An after-school music enrichment program for children in grades 2 – 5 has been running at G.H. Dawe School this year. The Explorers have been learning about West African culture, djembes and the use of drumming patterns to communicate information and news.
The community has come together to make this program come to life, with the City of Red Deer, Red Deer & District Community Foundation, and the Sutter Fund currently supporting the initial stages of delivering this unique program.
“As the only professional performing arts organization in the region, it makes a lot of sense for us to partner with our community to deliver a program that leverages the value of music education to create positive social development opportunities,” says Chandra Kastern, RDSO Executive Director. “After a couple of years of plotting and planning, it’s been a major achievement for us to see the band program get off the ground at the school, especially knowing that one of the objectives of Music + Explorers is to inspire a life-long interest in, and connection to, music in students living in Red Deer North.”
