Bucs drop second straight in blowout loss to Monarchs

Jun 26, 2017 | 4:59 PM

The 2016 Alberta Football League championship game between the Central Alberta Buccaneers was a 60-minute thriller.

Saturday’s rematch was anything but as the Monarchs blasted the Bucs 47-7 at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe.

The lone score of the game for the Buccaneers came when quarterback Judah Knip hooked up with receiver Axsivier Lawrence for a third quarter touchdown.

“We made a couple of mistakes and they capitalized on them. When they made mistakes, we were not as fortunate to capitalize on them,” Buccaneers head coach Fred Knip surmised.

Knip said the Bucs expected their game versus the reigning national champions to be a learning experience, and that’s exactly how it turned out.

“What we learned from the Monarchs is that we can play with them. The mistakes were marginal, but enough to throw us off our progression,” he noted. “We also learned that to be successful against the Monarchs, or the Calgary Gators, for that matter, we need to be all in the same boat and all rowing in the same direction, at the same time. We had some miscues where players made the wrong block, or turned the wrong way on a passing route, or missed a blitzing line-backer. The consequences spelled catastrophe as they exploited our mishaps.”

The Bucs now head into their second bye week of the season before visiting the expansion Parkland Predators on July 8.
