Chicken Bylaw passed by County Council

Jun 15, 2017 | 11:22 AM

Clearwater County Council has given second and third readings to a bylaw that authorizes chickens in the county’s hamlets.

The bylaw states that landowners would have to obtain a bi-annual chicken license, would be allowed a maximum of six chickens at any given time, and no roosters allowed.

Other than the hamlets of Withrow, Alhambra, Condor and Leslieville, Country Residential properties east of Range Road 9, are also allowed to possess chickens.

Nordegg was left out of the bylaw due to predatory reasons.

The cost for the bi-annual chicken license is $25 and can be picked up at the Ag Service Office.

Planner with Clearwater County Dustin Bisson says it’s nice to have this bylaw in place.

“It’s good from the County aspect in the sense that we have these restrictions and rules so we have a way to find people if they are having chickens outside the new current bylaw thats in place.”

The actual license itself is not available to purchase as of yet, but Bisson says they expect the license to be ready and available by July 1.

If you have any questions regarding the bylaw or the license you can call the County office at 403-845-4444.
