Lacombe to regulate multi-day garage sales

Jun 14, 2017 | 6:32 AM

LACOMBE – In response to citizen concerns, Lacombe City Council has approved amendments to the Nuisance Bylaw to regulate multi-day garage sales and provide enforcement on a complaint basis.

The Nuisance Bylaw includes a new set of regulations governing garage sales based on:

1. Length – Properties can hold up to six days of garage sales per calendar year. The rules apply to a specific garage sale per property, so a group of individuals cannot combine garage sales to extend past the combined six days on the same property.
2. Hours of operation – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.
3. Location – rules applies to garage sales that take place in residential districts only.
4. Tidiness – rules would be in place to ensure that garage sales are no untidy.

“If a property owner or tenant fails to meet the above conditions, they would have created a nuisance and would be subject to a fine and/or an order to remedy the unsightly conditions,” said Chief Administrative Officer Dion Pollard.

Council also approved the Citizen Request and Response Policy.

It is an effort to provide consistency and formalize how public inquiries made to elected officials are processed,

“The City of Lacombe is committed to ensuring that any inquiry or complaint regarding civic affairs is given consideration and is dealt with in a fair, open and timely manner,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “A priority of Council is to provide the public with responses to any questions that have been presented directly to us.”

The Citizen Request and Response Policy outlines the City’s process regarding requests to address inquiries or complaints raised by the public regarding, but not limited to municipal employees, activities, programs, services, and facilities.

It excludes the Lacombe Police Service and Peace Officers.
