Tornado touches down near Three Hills

Jun 2, 2017 | 9:04 PM

There were some tense moments Friday afternoon after a tornado touched down southeast of Red Deer.

Environment Canada issued a Tornado Alert for Kneehill County and Starland County at 5 p.m. after a twister was spotted near Three Hills.

The tornado was moving east at 50 km/h.

The alert was ended about 30 minutes later. No one was injured.

Brittanny Cawiezel, who works at the Trochu Golf and Country Club, says she heard a barn roof got ripped off and a few trees were down.

She says she hasn’t heard any reports of injuries or major damage.

“It was right over the clubhouse, it was freaky,” Cawiezel said.

“It started to hail a little, and the wind really picked up, but that’s expected with a tornado.”

An assessment of the size of the tornado and the damage it caused will be done over the weekend.
