Council aims to curb concerns about visitor pay parking in Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake Town Council wants to make sure there’s no confusion when it comes to the new Visitor Pay Parking program.

Rather than wait until after the first year of the program, council has asked Administration to bring forward options to address some concerns residents have raised regarding the program, which takes effect on June 8.

“The Visitor Pay Parking program in Sylvan Lake is still planned to go forward as proposed,” says Mayor Sean McIntyre. “But some key issues were brought up to us by our residents with respect to the rollout and some of the details of the program that council thought was worth taking a second look at.”

Part of the review requested by council will focus on what concerns can be looked at now and which ones can be addressed down the road.

“Basically, we’re taking time before the program rolls out to look at the program again and make sure that the objectives of the program are being achieved,” McIntyre says.

Revenue from the Visitor Pay Parking program is to be used for increased enforcement, cleanup and maintenance in the Lakeshore district. It’s expected that the cost of implementing the program, about $535,000, will be recovered after six years of operation.

Visitor parking rates will be $2-hourly and $10-daily.

“Even with the rollout of the program, there are still ample amounts of free parking available in the downtown,” McIntyre notes. “The pay parking program is applicable seasonally, spring through fall, and only in very specific areas. So we’re looking to make sure the rollout is smooth and the application of the program is what it was intended to be.”

McIntyre says Sylvan Lakers are encouraged to register their license plates with the Town at sylvanlake.ca.
