Red Deer and District FCSS announces latest funding recipients

May 23, 2017 | 7:48 AM

Nineteen programs have been selected to receive funding from Red Deer and District FCSS over the next three years.

Strong social and family relationships and good mental health are among the goals of the chosen programs, according to officials.

A total of $2.29 million has been earmarked for the programs for January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020. Forty-four programs applied for funding, totaling $4.46 million. Officials say the programs are selected through a rigorous process, which also considered factors such as an agency’s leadership, willingness to collaborate and financial accountability.

Municipal partners for Red Deer and District FCSS include Red Deer, Red Deer County, Delburne, Bowden, Elnora and Penhold.

“We heard a common theme from the six municipal partners: that the economy and its effect on local families was a top priority for them,” said Kathy Sitter, Red Deer & District FCSS Board Chair. “The programs being funded have been chosen in part for their ability to address some of the financial stressors that can lead to anxiety and depression, domestic violence and other issues.”

Family counselling, support for youth, and outreach for seniors were among the programs selected. Programs for preschool-aged children are also on the list. Home visitation, for example, can foster early child development and competent parenting, and reduce the risk for child abuse and neglect.

The Red Deer & District FCSS mandate is to provide preventive social programming that enhances the social well-being of individuals and families through promotion or intervention strategies provided at the earliest opportunity. Provincial funding (80 per cent) is matched with municipal tax dollars (20 per cent).
