A local tribute to those who have fallen or gone missing in action while fighting for Canada has apparently been hit by vandals.

Al Cameron with Veterans Voices of Canada says it was one of his committee members who made him aware of an incident at their site along Highway 11 near Sylvan Lake.

"They noticed that one of the flag poles was down, it was actually in the ditch," Cameron said Wednesday in a video posted on Facebook. "The flag was taken off the pole and just thrown aside. Yeah, I’m kind of choked about that actually."

He went on to say that one of the hero plaques at the memorial had been also removed and left in the ditch.

Regarding the vandalism, Cameron said he had one Veteran say to him, "Absolutely sickening. All we can do is show them how strong we are. We'll stand back up and continue the good work. One of our guards in Kingston was disrespected last night and they spat on the ground at him."

Vandalism last year at the Flags of Remembrance memorial in Kingston, Ontario forced Veterans Voices of Canada to have on-site security. He’s hoping they don’t have to do the same here.

Cameron will be reporting the incident to RCMP.
