Alberta man pleads guilty to seven counts under Wildlife Act

Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services has charged an Alberta resident with 12 counts under the Wildlife Act.

As a result, on Feb. 12, Ian Cameron pleaded guilty to violating seven of those counts, including three counts of hunting without a license, two counts of hunting at night, one count of hunting with a prohibited light, and one count of allowing edible flesh to become unfit for human consumption.

Cameron was sentenced to a global penalty of 75 days in jail, $2,000 in fines, and an eight-year suspension of his recreational hunting licences.

He was also ordered by the court to report future possession of any wildlife. All items seized were forfeited by the crown.

The investigation began when fish and wildlife officers responded to two reports of shot and left mule deer that were reported through the Report A Poacher line. Officials say they seemed unrelated.

However, officers collected DNA evidence and a cellphone located near one of the mule deer at the kill scenes. This led them to obtain a search warrant, and officers conducted a lawful forensic analysis that linked the phone to Cameron.

The investigation unveiled that Cameron illegally shot and killed at least four antlered mule deer and one antlered bull moose while not holding any recreational hunting licenses. Officers also found he illegally used a spotlight to hunt wildlife at night between Red Deer, Pine Lake, and Delburne.

All Wildlife Act violations were investigated by FWES. The RCMP were not involved in the wildlife investigation.
