Dr. Bill Stuebing, a longtime trustee for Red Deer Public Schools, has sadly died.

The school division shared the news Tuesday morning that Stuebing, who’d served up until the the 2021 municipal election, has passed away at 81-years-old. Stuebing served the division as trustee for the 26 years prior.

“During his many years on the board, Bill was known for his quiet strength, steady perspective, and his belief that every decision must put students first. He brought wisdom, integrity, and heart to every table he sat at. Whether advocating for strong learning opportunities, supporting schools through change, or celebrating the achievements of students and staff, Bill’s presence made a meaningful and lasting impact,” Red Deer Public stated in a release.

“Bill, who was also a long-standing Sociology Professor, was respected by colleagues across the province and cherished by those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His legacy is reflected in the countless students whose lives were touched by the initiatives he supported, the staff he encouraged and the division he helped strengthen.”

Stuebing spent eight years on the Public School Boards Association of Alberta (PSBAA) executive committee.

In 2024, he was honoured with the Dick Baker Legacy Award by the PSBAA.

The award recognizes significant contributions of public school trustees, administrators, and members of the greater community whose efforts further reflect the promotion of and support for public school education.

“On behalf of the board of trustees and the entire Red Deer Public Schools community, we extend our deepest condolences to Bill’s family, friends and all who mourn his loss,” the division adds.

“We are grateful for his service, his leadership, and the profound contributions he made to public education. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire us.”
