RDP Soccer star sets ACAC record with 11 goals in single game

Oct 6, 2021 | 9:39 AM

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics is proud to announce the RDP Athletes of the Week:

Jenica Swartz – Queens Soccer and Cross Country Running

Hometown – Lacombe, AB

Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional – Medicine (1st year)

Dual-sport student-athlete Jenica Swartz had an amazing weekend with both the RDP Queens Soccer team and Queens Cross Country Running squad. This past Friday, the Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional – Medicine student scored 11 times against the visiting Ambrose University Lions, setting an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer single game goal scoring record. The previous record was seven goals in one game. This impressive contribution helped the RDP Queens down the Lions 22-0, earning Swartz the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game.

Then at Running Room Grand Prix #2 on Saturday, Swartz (25:36) impressively placed second among ACAC female racers over 6 km. With this fantastic result, the first-year runner from Lacombe helped the Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team win the combined team trophy, which considered the top three times from the Kings and Queens. The RDP Queens captured third spot.

After Grand Prix #2 in Camrose, Swartz joined the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team in the second half of its 8-1 win over the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. It was the third consecutive victory for the Queens.

Jayden Wildcat – Kings Cross Country Running

Hometown – Maskwacis, AB

Open Studies (1st year)

Jayden Wildcat has been very impressive in his first year of running in the ACAC. This past Saturday, the Open Studies student was a key contributor in the Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team winning the combined team trophy at Running Room Grand Prix #2. Maskwacis’ Wildcat (29:52) finished seventh among ACAC male participants over 8 km, less than a second behind veteran teammate Devin Saunders. This performance in Camrose was even more significant with the unavailability of Daniel Szucs, who is one of the Kings’ leaders. Wildcat’s contributions helped the RDP Kings Cross Country Running team earn second spot as a group after losing the tie breaker to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks for first. Both teams had 40 points, but the Kodiaks’ fourth place runner finished one position ahead of the Kings’ fourth racer.

With the recent recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Wildcat brought the RDP Cross Country Running team orange ribbons, which were provided by his grandmother. The student-athletes and coaches found this to be a special and meaningful experience.
