An individual from the Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School community has tested positive for COVID-19.

A letter to parents/guardians and any staff or visitors from school officials on Thursday (Sept. 17) does not say who the individual is, or when and where the person contracted the virus.

Principal Chris Good says in the letter that anyone from the school community deemed to have been in close contact with the individual who tested positive will have already been contacted by school authorities, the letter reads.

Lindsay Thurber remains open to learning and expects students back on Monday. There are no classes Friday as it is a previously scheduled professional development day for staff.

Alberta Health Services is working to trace the origin of the case.

Families are reminded to monitor for signs of COVID-19 by utilizing the school division’s daily screening checklist prior to attending school.

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 from a school in Red Deer was on Sept. 11 at Escuela Vista Grande.

In Alberta, ten schools are reporting outbreaks (2+ cases) of the coronavirus, according to Alberta.ca. Seven are in Calgary, two are in Edmonton, and one is in Lethbridge. The ten includes one school in Calgary, St. Wilfrid Elementary School, which is on watch status meaning it has declared five or more cases.
