CAEP labour force study supports business recovery following COVID-19

Apr 7, 2020 | 3:33 PM

To support business development across the region, particularly following the effects of COVID19 pandemic, the Central Alberta Economic Partnership has joined forces with post-secondary institutions as well as economic development service organizations to research the regional labour market.

CAEP says the project, awarded to MNP in Red Deer, will result in the creation of a regional labour profile that identifies labour force trends, workforce development gaps, and potentially emerging occupations.

“As a Canadian firm, with a local office in Red Deer, MNP is proud to support business and economic development in our region, because it truly benefits all central Albertans,” says Doug Stroh, the Regional Managing Partner for MNP Central Alberta. “The region also seeks to better understand the potential of underemployed and underrepresented groups in the regional labour market, including the recent market conditions.”

The purpose of the research, according to CAEP, is to strengthen central Alberta’s competitiveness by increasing diverse workforce participation and focusing on workforce attraction, retention and development.

In the near future and with additional funding, a strategic action plan on workforce development/attraction and will be developed and implemented. To be completed by fall 2020, the research findings will be used by employers, economic development practitioners, training and employment service providers.

The seven participating organizations represent the community and business needs of more than 35 municipalities, multiple Indigenous groups, and 12,000 businesses which provide employment, supply chain, and services to a region of approximately 400,000 people:

• Olds College

• Burman University Lacombe

• Central Alberta Economic Partnership Ltd.

• Central Alberta Regional Innovation Network

• Community Futures Central Alberta

• Central Alberta: Access Prosperity

• Red Deer College

“RDC is proud to participate in this regional labour force study. As we transition to become Red Deer University, the valuable findings will assist our institution to ensure current and future programs meet the needs of students and business across the region,” said Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC President. “As one of the largest employers within central Alberta, we also look forward to using the study to inform our organization’s future workforce planning decisions.”

A Labour Summit will be held to report on the findings as well as to begin to inform a development and attraction strategy for the region. Considering C19, this may be a virtual event. Employers interested in participating in the research project or the summit are invited to contact CAEP at 403-357-2237 or email kimberley@caepalberta.com

Funding for the project is through Government of Alberta with financial and in-kind contributions from the postsecondary partners and non-profit organizations.
