Sutter Fund Golf Tournament helping local families in need

A major charitable fundraiser that helps local families in need each year teed off at Red Deer’s River Bend Golf and Recreation Area on Friday.

The 23rd annual Red Deer Sutter Fund Golf Tournament has 216 golfers taking part this year on the heels of Thursday’s live and silent auction at the Black Knight Inn.

Brian Sutter says the event has raised nearly $4 million since its inception.

“It’s almost an unparalleled silent and live auction,” explains Sutter. “People come from all over western Canada and the United States to help. There are jerseys, trips, and Gibson’s Whiskey has come on board this year, and we’re auctioning off a night of liquor tasting at The Keg and supper included so we do so many little things like that that are unique.”

He says the tournament usually raises a little over $100,000 each year and he credits fantastic sponsorship with helping the Sutter Fund reach that goal.

Aside from its fundraising objective, Sutter describes the tournament as a celebration of sorts for those who take part.

“People come from all over the place and they look forward to seeing different guys every year,” says Sutter. “There’s Hall of Fame guys that golf, there’s ex-Rebels that golf, there’s young guys that are playing NCAA or in the Western Hockey League from this area, there’s Hall of Fame cowboys and chuckwagon drivers and there’s a little bit of everybody that comes and helps out.”

He adds that the Sutter Fund continues to help out folks from all walks of life.

“Kids are going to school and they don’t have warm enough clothes on their backs or food in their lunch buckets or warm enough shoes on their feet,” he explains. “You find out from teachers and from policemen, from doctors and anybody else that will pass on to myself or one on the committee of someone in need. Whatever it may be in life, we help out.”
