Red Deer Rebels goaltender Chase Coward has been invited to Canada’s National Junior Team summer camp.

The camp goes from July 23-27 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

Coward, a native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, appeared in 35 regular season games with the Rebels in his first full season with the club in 2022-23. He compiled a 22-10-0-2 record with a 2.51 goals against average, .906 save percentage, and two shutouts.

In the 2022 WHL Playoffs, Coward was 4-3-1 with a 2.24 goals against average, .925 save percentage, and one shutout.

“This is an exciting first step as we begin preparations for the upcoming season and the opportunity to compete at the 2023 World Juniors on home ice in Halifax and Moncton this December,” said Alan Millar, Hockey Canada’s director of player personnel. “We are excited about this group of players, and we look forward to returning to the ice for a highly-competitive camp to kick off a new season.”

A total of 44 players were chosen, made up of four goaltenders, 14 defenseman and 26 forwards. The camp roster features 26 players that have been selected in the NHL Draft, including eight first-round picks.

Canada’s National Junior Team summer camp staff will feature six experienced coaches from across the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), including Shaun Clouston, Steve Hartley, Jim Hulton, Brent Kisio, Ryan Oulahen and Brad Lauer, who lead the Edmonton Oil Kings to a Western Hockey League championship as head coach this year.

Hockey Canada announced in May that the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Moncton, New Brunswick, from Dec. 26, 2022 to Jan. 5, 2023.
