EDMONTON- New figures indicate Alberta leads the country in vehicle thefts.

According to Statistics Canada more than 60 vehicles are stolen in the province each day.

To put the numbers into perspective, Alberta has about 11 per cent of the national population, but accounts for 29 per cent of all vehicle thefts.

In January, one quarter of the stolen vehicles had their keys inside at the time.

The Alberta Motor Association calls the numbers staggering, and says people need to do more to prevent the crime.
