The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs saw their incredible run at the Mac's Midget Tournament in Calgary come to a tough end New Year's Day.

The Chiefs were blanked 4-0 by the Regina Pat Canadians in Monday's championship final at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

It was a gutsy win by Regina when you consider they needed triple overtime to win their Sunday night semi-final over New York.

Regina goalie Jordan Thompson made 16 saves to earn the shutout while Bretton Park turned aside 27 of 31 shots for Red Deer.

Ryan McBeath was named Player of the Game for Red Deer alongside Matthew Culling for Regina.

The Optimist Chiefs return to Alberta Midget Hockey League action this Saturday when they visit the CFR Bisons.
