A mechanical inspection of the car involved in the tragic deaths of two Drayton Valley teens last Thursday found there was exhaust leaking into the vehicle.

The inspection was completed Wednesday and it was determined that a faulty exhaust system component may have caused exhaust to enter into the vehicle cabin. It is unknown whether or not this was an existing problem or a recent occurrence, according to RCMP.

Gage Bogart, 17, and Shaina Lynn Ridenour, 16, were overtaken by the fumes while sitting in the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta.

While patrolling the area of 54 Street and 24 Avenue on an unrelated call, Mounties found Bogart and Ridenour unconscious in the car. Ridenour was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, while Bogart died in an Edmonton hospital late on Christmas Day.

Corporal Chris Warren with RCMP Media Relations said in his 10 years of policing, he has never come across a tragedy like this, calling it a "complete accident."

Warren also said it is unknown how long the vehicle had been idling for before Mounties arrived, and will most likely never be known.

A memorial service for Ridenour was held on December 27. Bogart's funeral service will be held on January 3, 2018 at the MacKenzie Conference Centre in Drayton Valley.
