High School graduation rates, improving learning outcomes for special needs students and working with the Aboriginal community are among the top priorities for Red Deer Public School Board Trustee candidate Bill Christie.

Christie, now seeking his third term on the Board, says he’s running again because he really enjoys the role of trustee, saying “This district is great, the staff are great, students are great.”

However, Christie feels there’s going to be some challenges with the provincial government.

“I understand now it’s thinking about re-writing the Public Schools Act, even though the previous government had passed the act, it didn’t give royal ascent.”

Christie says he thinks the school boards now are going to really have to keep an eye on what the government is doing.

“Cause this government said during the last election campaign that they are going to give more control, more decision making, more local accountability to boards and they’ve slowly been pulling more back to Edmonton.”

Budgeting, safe and caring schools, student wellness and mental health are also issues Christie says will be coming forward over the next term.
