City looking for ideas for Smart Cities Challenge

RED DEER- The City is looking for input in identifying how data and connected technology could improve the lives of Red Deerians through the Federal Governments Smart Cities Challenge.

The City of Red Deer is competing for a prize of $10 million to implement bold, innovative ideas that respond to challenges facing cities that use technology, connectivity and data.

The competition calls on communities across the country to bring forward their best ideas for innovation.

Communities are asked to submit and commit to work on one specific, compelling challenge.  

“There are many innovative ways technology can be used to improve community life, such as free city-wide Wifi, or the implementation of a 311 service. This grant would give us an opportunity to explore technology-enabled solutions that could change the way we live, work and enjoy our city,” said Director of Corporate Services, Lisa Perkins.

As a first step in the application process, municipalities must submit a “challenge statement” – that is a brief declaration of an important issue or opportunity that can be addressed through data and connected technology.

Once the statement is finalized, it will shape the City’s overall application, which will be further developed through collaboration and discussion with community partners.

Residents can share their views until March 28.

“This is an amazing opportunity to discover ideas that our residents might have to integrate technology into our community in a way that works for them,” said Newton. “Winning this challenge would be a great injection into our community life, and we know our residents are up to the challenge.”

Once all ideas have been gathered, City staff will bring the top ideas to Let’s Talk on April 7 at the Parkland Mall for final voting.
