RCMP remind residents of back to school safety

Aug 24, 2017 | 6:23 AM

Strathcona County, Alberta – In anticipation of the upcoming school year, the Strathcona County RCMP, along with our enforcement partners will be involved in educating the public on back to school safety. For children this is an exciting time of year and they may forget basic road safety rules as they walk, bicycle or ride the bus to school. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through residential areas and to adhere to speed limits in school and playground zones.

Safety tips for walking to school:

Make sure your child’s walk to school is a safe route, and your child is familiar with it.
Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross.
Always stop and look both ways before crossing the street.
Cross streets only at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right and then left again before proceeding, even at intersections with pedestrian walk signs.

Safety tips on the School Bus:

Wait for the bus in a safe place well back from the edge of the road.
Always wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before leaving the curb.
Remain seated and do not move around on the bus.
Never distract the bus driver. Always follow his or her instructions

Safety tip for riding your bike to school:

Wear a properly-fitted helmet, and have clothes that are suited for cycling.
Have your child’s bikes fitted properly and in good working order.
Know and obey all traffic rules, signs and signals.
At intersections, get off your bike and walk across.

Safety tips for drivers:

Examine the road ahead and obey posted speed limits. Always be prepared to slow down or stop.
Do not drive while distracted – always be alert of your surroundings.
Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks.
Be cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway.
Watch for kids between parked vehicles and on sidewalks.

Speed limits in school zones and playground zones:

– School zones will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days

– Playground zones will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day
