Two Red Deer filmmakers have been nominated for Alberta’s version of the Oscars.

Matt Grue of Ignition Films and Reuben Tschetter of The Cache Project have each been nominated for a 2018 Alberta Film and Television (Rosie) Award, a presentation of the Alberta Media Production Industries Association.

Grue is nominated for Best Screenplay (for features over 30 minutes). The nomination comes for the locally produced thriller Break on Through.

The movie is about a group of strangers who find themselves trapped in an abandoned, isolated farmhouse during a potentially cataclysmic world event. As their fear and confusion mounts, they must learn to trust one another if they have any hope of survival. Break on Through was filmed in Red Deer, Alix and Clive.

Tschetter is nominated in two categories for his films – Best Documentary Series and Best Screenwriter (non-fiction under 30 minutes) for Forgotten Prairie, a film about a group of history buffs that tours ghost towns in Saskatchewan.

Ponoka-born actor Shaun Johnston, best known for his longtime role on Heartland, is up for Best Performance by an Alberta Actor for Wynonna Earp (No Future in the Past), and Heartland (A Long Shot).

Three Red Deer College Motion Picture Arts projects are in the running for the Fil Fraser Award for Best Student Production – Brian, Sam Burns and Amr Moustafa, producers; The Dancer, Everett Sokol, Sam Burns and Jared Clausen, producers; and You & Me, Hannah Sanson, producer.

The 44th annual Rosie Awards will be handed out on May 12 in Calgary.
