Women’s Shelter latest beneficiary of 100 Women Red Deer

Apr 18, 2018 | 2:28 PM

The Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter is the latest community agency to benefit from the generous pockets of 100 Women Who Care Red Deer.

CAWES was chosen at 100 Women’s most recent meeting held this week.

Organizations which are selected typically receive between $15,000 and $20,000 from the quarterly get-togethers where each member makes a donation to the group that wins a vote.

Ian Wheeliker, Executive Director with CAWES, says they are thrilled and honoured to be this month’s recipient.

“It goes right into the services we provide directly to the women. We help them out with transportation, provide for all their food needs for women and kids while they’re with us, personal care items, and just anything we can do to help them out,” he says. “We need to fundraise close to $300,000 a year to be able to do all the extras we don’t get government funding for.”

Wheeliker says in 2017, they saw 200 more clients than the year prior, and are projecting about 700 in 2019.

He also thanks the community for always thinking of CAWES.

“We’ve been able to really get the word out to the community that we can work with women who are experiencing domestic violence, don’t have anywhere else to go, and even if there are mental health or addiction problems.”

The next meeting for 100 Women is September 24. 100 Men meet on June 4.
