This week was cut short due to the Easter holiday. Debate was largely focused on the new firearms legislation, rural crime, and cultural heritage.  

The following was debated in the House:

Bill C-55 – An Act to amend the Oceans Act and the Canada Petroleum Resources Act (Third Reading)
Bill C-68 – An Act to amend the Fisheries Act and other Acts in consequence (Second Reading)
Bill C-71 – An act to amend certain Acts and Regulations in relation to firearms (Second Reading)
Bill C-232 – Canadian Jewish Heritage Month Act (Third Reading)
Bill C-374 – An Act to amend the Historic Sites and Monuments Act (composition of the Board) (Report Stage)
M-166 – Postal banking system
M-167 – Rural crime in Canada
M-168 – Net neutrality

Last week, the Liberals introduced new firearms legislation, Bill C-71. I was scheduled to speak during the debate on Monday, but the Liberals stalled and used their majority to shut down debate before many Members, including myself, had the opportunity to represent our constituents’ concerns. Justin Trudeau claims to listen to Canadians, but shoving legislation through the House without allowing for proper debate is the exact opposite of listening to Canadians.

Also on Monday, the Prime Minister exonerated six Tsilhqot’in chiefs who were unjustly hanged in British Columbia in 1864. The current chiefs of Tsilhqot’in First Nation were present on the floor of the House of Commons during the exoneration, and a drumming ceremony also took place.

On Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the screening of the film, Myth, and a reception at the Embassy of Ukraine.

This week, I attended­­ six meetings and two events, and I taped one video message. I will return to the riding on Thursday evening as the House will not sit on Friday due to the Easter holiday. I will remain in the riding over the weekend and the next two weeks while the House is on recess.  My next update will be on my travels throughout our beautiful constituency of Yellowhead.
