Elderly man assaulted during break-in

Mar 27, 2018 | 11:41 AM

An investigation is underway after a 79-year-old man was assaulted during a theft at his Clearwater County home.

Shortly before 2:25 a.m. on March 14, police say the elderly property owner went outside to check on his truck and came across three masked males in his garage.  A confrontation occurred and the property owner was assaulted.

One of the males fled on the victim’s ATV while the other two left in the small four-door sedan they arrived in. RCMP located the ATV and attempted to stop it as the driver fled on foot. RCMP Police Dog Services attended but the male was not located. The stolen ATV was recovered and returned to the owner.

The injured senior remains in hospital as he recovers from non-life threatening injuries.

Police have identified persons of interest as they continue to investigate the incident.

“A call to service like this is a priority for our responding members,” says Sergeant Jay Penner of the Rocky Mountain House RCMP.  “Whenever there is suspicious activity on your property, call 911 and let us handle the incident.  In this case, I’m confident that there are people who have information on this incident and I’m asking them to come forward.”
