Red Deer native Mark Bolding has won a prestigious coaching award south of the border.

Bolding was named the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Division III National Coach of the Year on Thursday at the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship banquet.

Head coach of the Norwich University women’s ice hockey team, Boulding earned the award for the fourth time in his career after previously winning three straight years from 2010 to 2012.

Bolding guided Norwich to a nation’s best 25-1-3 record this season and its seventh NCAA Division III national semifinal appearance in just 11 years at the varsity level. Norwich won its seventh New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) regular season title in the last eight years, as well as its eighth NEHC Tournament title.

In 11 seasons behind the bench, Bolding has guided Norwich to a 243-62-20 record for a .778 winning percentage, which ranks third among active Division III coaches. His 243 victories rank tied for 28th all-time in NCAA women’s college hockey history and ties for sixth all-time in Division III history with UW-Superior’s Dan Laughlin.

Bolding coached three AHCA East Region All-Americans this season and now has tutored 18 overall in his tenure. He also guided the Cadets to a record-setting 12 different NEHC All-Conference selections, including five first teamers in 2017-18.

A 1995 Norwich University graduate, Bolding began his coaching career as an assistant with the men’s hockey team.

He played three games for the Medicine Hat Tigers in 1987-88 before playing four seasons at Norwich, serving three as captain. Bolding was inducted into the Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
