Lacombe County Council endorsing Private Member’s Motion on rural crime

Lacombe County Council is throwing its support behind a Private Member’s Motion aimed at prompting a study on rural crime in Canada.

Unanimous endorsement from Lacombe County Council has been given to Private Member’s Motion M-167 proposed by Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs.

According to Lacombe County officials, Stubbs has asked the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security to undertake a study on rural crime and recommend crime reduction initiatives. The proposed study would look at a number of factors from crime rates to trends, to RCMP and policing resources specific to rural, remote and Indigenous communities, as well as the current partnerships between provincial and municipal police.

The eventual goal for the committee is to have recommendations for increased support and improved crime prevention and ideas on how to curb rural crime rates to the House within six months of adopting the motion.

“Lacombe County Council has been actively involved in Rural Crime Watch Associations across the County and we are concerned about the rate in which rural crime has escalated in the past years,” said Reeve Paula Law in a County news release. “Crime is a major problem in rural areas across Alberta and we urgently need new strategies to address police shortages and current limitations of our justice system for the safety of our rural communities.”

Last year, Lacombe County Council approved funding of a General Investigation Services position based out of Blackfalds RCMP Detachment and has also supported initiatives such as the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) program throughout the County.

In addition, Lacombe County Council will be presenting a resolution regarding rural crime at the upcoming Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) spring convention.
