Chinook’s Edge updates 2019-2022 Capital Plan

INNISFAIL- At their March 14 meeting, the Chinook’s Edge School Board dealt with a number of issues including the 2019-2022 Capital Plan and relocation of some area classrooms.

The Board approved an updated Capital Plan, which represents the highest capital priorities in the division.

Modernization work at  H.J Cody High School in Sylvan Lake remains the division’s highest modernization priority.

Other projects on the wish list include the replacement of Penhold Elementary School with a new 600 capacity middle school, a new Olds Elementary School, a request for a new 500 capacity Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4 school in Carstairs, and expansion at Carstairs Elementary School.

The Board also approved the use of funds from land sales to construct a connecting hallway for four relocatable classrooms that were recently announced for Jessie Duncan Elementary School in Innisfail.

Rapid growth in the Town of Penhold has resulted in capacity and utilization challenges at all three Chinook’s Edge schools in the town, and officials say the addition of these classrooms at Jessie Duncan will ease the pressure at each school.

As a result, the following grade configurations will be in effect at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year:

Jessie Duncan School: Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 3

Penhold Elementary School: Grades 4-6

Penhold Crossing Secondary School: Grades 7-12
