St. Francis of Assisi Middle School welcomes Japanese students

An infusion of Japanese culture is about to hit St. Francis of Assisi Middle School.

Twelve grade eight-aged students arrived Tuesday from the all-girls Nagasaki Junshin Junior High School for a two-week stay.

St. Francis Principal Gary Gylander says the visit is hugely beneficial on both ends.

“They’re coming to experience a different culture they probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience again,” he said.

“Our students are getting to experience a different culture through these students from Japan, which is key I think to where education is going. Education isn’t just about what’s in a textbook, it’s about bringing the real world to them now and providing them experiences that are going to help them later in life.”

Over their stay, students will attend ESL classes each morning and go to other classes with grade eight students throughout the day. Outside of school hours, student will travel to Calgary to see Olympic Park, Drumheller for the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and get a tour of Red Deer.

At the end of their trip, the Japanese students will host a cultural day for the local students and parents.
