A Red Deer man has been sentenced to two years behind bars after an apartment building was set on fire in Riverside Meadows.

It was just before 11 a.m. on Dec. 15, 2016 when police and fire crews responded to the building at 58 Avenue and 61 Street where fire had broken out on the third floor.

The building was evacuated with no one being hurt and the fire was extinguished.

Investigators deemed the fire as arson and an arrest was made just over a month later.

In December, Gary Colwill pleaded guilty to one count of arson – disregard for human life.

The 56-year-old was sentenced to 24 months behind bars.
