Early-Bird registration deadline approaching for Woody’s RV World Marathon

Mar 11, 2018 | 7:43 AM

Local long-distance runners are being encouraged to take advantage of early-bird pricing when registering for this year’s 20th annual Woody’s RV World Marathon event.

The deadline to register at the reduced rate is prior to March 20, with those who do, eligible to win a trip to Las Vegas in the Run Red Deer to Vegas contest.

Officials say all full and half marathon runners registered prior to March 20 will be given a 20th anniversary long-sleeve shirt, while all 10K participants registered before early-bird will receive a technical fabric tee. Runners who register after early-bird will receive a hat.

According to officials, hundreds of runners have already registered for the May 20th marathon and half-marathon in Red Deer this year.

Registration Coordinator Garrett Zimmerman says last year’s event was their biggest-ever.

“Last year was record numbers for participants, so we’re excited about this year and hope that we can see that number climb.”

Zimmerman adds the race is also a fundraiser for the community.

“We take donations on behalf of the Red Deer Hospice, so any of our runners can add that to their purchase when they go to register and the money stays right in the community here.”

“I think people just want to feel good about what they’re doing, they want to have some fun,” Zimmerman speculates. “Our race is really about getting out and enjoying the beautiful path system that we have in Red Deer, the trails, the river.”

Meanwhile, Race Director Curtis Marquart is proud of how the event has grown over the past two decades.

“It’s a community that’s grown leaps and bounds and you can just tell by the number of events that have exploded, not even Red Deer but basically everywhere,” explains Marquart. “I mean we have our event, you have the Spartan events, all those mud events that you see. It’s running and just participation is just exploded ten-fold.”

“Our event is one of the only marathons, half-marathon, 10K’s that I can think of that basically has 95 – 98 per cent of that run on the pathways,” claims Marquart. “The only other event that I’ve ever been to, it’s all on city streets.”
